On April 8, 2009, Stephan Ackermann said, among other things, at a press conference on the occasion of his appointment as Bishop of Trier:
“I have enjoyed the spring sunshine a bit in front of my house the last few days; I looked at the Cathedral, which, of course, can be seen from my garden with its entire north side.
It leapt to mind ‘You’re looking at your future Cathedral – and it remains totally unimpressed. It’s sitting there calm as could be just like yesterday and day before yesterday and through how many centuries.’ That, too, had a very calming effect on me.”
Dr. Stephan Ackermann has been Bishop of Germany’s oldest diocese since April 8 (appointment by Pope Benedict XVI), 2009, with inauguration and enthronement on May 24, 2009.
According to different counts, Stephan Ackermann is the 100th or the 103rd Bishop of Trier. In the end, it cannot be determined which number is really the correct one. At any rate, the following is a list of 99 predecessors as Bishops of Trier:
